BALANCE currently offers Housing Workshops for clients in San Francisco AND outside of the San Francisco area.
For San Francisco clients: Certificate of Homebuyer Education for San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s Programs
In order to qualify for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s programs, you must obtain a Certificate of Homebuyer Education. The certificate can only be obtained by completing ten hours of homebuyer education in the following order:
Step 1: Attend a 2-Hour MOHCD Orientation
Description: This orientation will introduce you to the home buying process and eligibility for programs available through the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD).
How to Register: If you have not already completed the two hours of Orientation education, please visit homeownershipsf.org/events/category /workshops/home-buyers-orientation to register for one of the events listed on that page entitled MOHCD Program Orientation.
Step 2: Attend a 6-Hour First Time Homebuyer Workshop
Description: This workshop will help you best prepare yourself for homeownership and what to expect in the mortgage loan process. Our workshops satisfy the education requirement for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s programs.
Our agency offers two options for the 6-hour workshop:
FREE Option: A FREE 6-hour workshops split into 3-hour sessions. These classes take place on two consecutive Saturdays and must be completed in order.
Self-paced Paid Option: We offer a $75 self-paced workshop via Framework, which allows you to complete the 6-hour homebuyer education requirement at your own pace. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you must present to your housing counselor to schedule your individual counseling appointment with the same agency.

Step 3: Attend a one-on-one pre-purchase counseling appointment within 1 year of your workshop completion
Description: This counseling session will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your specific financial situation and homeownership goals with a counselor.
How to Register: This appointment can only be completed after attending the Orientation and 6 Hour First Time Homebuyer Workshop. For clients outside of San Francisco: General Certificate of Homebuyer Education
For those interested in receiving a General Certificate of Homebuyer Education and are not interested in applying for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s programs, you will only need to attend six hours of Housing Workshop education and complete a two-hour one-on-one pre-purchase counseling appointment. Please see below for a list of our current offerings. In the case that the event becomes sold out, we will do our best to accommodate the attendance of “walk-in” clients if registered and waitlisted attendees do not show up by the start time of the workshop. The one-on-one pre-purchase appointment must be completed no later than one year after completing the 6-Hour First Time Homebuyer Workshop.
