Whether currently behind on bills or soon will be, resist the urge to hide your head in the sand. You can gain control of the situation by doing the following:

• Contact creditors before missing a payment
• Be honest and calm
• Be conservative with time frames and financial promises
• Offer a specific solutions
• Keep a journal of people you spoke with and what was said
• Correspond primarily by mail
• Never send post-dated checks
• Know your legal rights
• Maintain contact with creditors

While avoidance is tempting, doing so will only make the situation worse. Be brave!
