San Francisco - With credit unions across the country coping with bankrupt-prone members, a San Francisco phone counseling service, BALANCE Financial Fitness, disclosed this week it is forecasting a near doubling of its CU business in a year which is already marked by having Digital Federal Credit Union, Boeing Employees Credit Union and United Airlines Employees CU among its latest clients.

"We now have 70 credit unions as partners, and we expect to probably double that by 50 to 70 more," said a spokesman for the service which is a subsidiary of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco.

Under a fee schedule worked out with CUs, BALANCE, which started five years ago, but picked up steam after September 11, lists State Employees Credit Union in Raliegh, N.C., San Mateo Credit Union in California, and Jax Navy FCU, Jacksonville, Fla. as top clients.

As part of its services, trained BALANCE counselors from offices in San Francisco and Jacksonville, Fla. field member calls for CUs helping out on debt management plans and budget/debt counseling.
