A nonprofit San Francisco-based credit counseling organization has stepped forward to reimburse Utahns who lost money when the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Utah (CCCS) failed last year.

BALANCE Financial, a subsidiary of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco - an organization unrelated to the similarly named Utah service - has issued approximately $30,000 in checks ranging in value from $5 to $1,800 to 85 Utahns who contracted with CCCS of Utah to help them manage their finances, then saw their debts go unpaid. SALT LAKE CITY (1/14/05)--Balance Financial--a consumer credit counseling service used by many Utah credit unions--is helping consumers who were financially hurt by the now-defunct Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) of Utah.

The subsidiary of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco--similarly named but unrelated to the failed Utah company--paid $30,000 to 85 Utah residents who went to CCCS of Utah for financial help.

Balance Financial President Joanne Budde said the agency is stepping forward to protect the reputation of Consumer Credit Counseling Services. We don't want one agency to destroy the trust we've developed and good reputation we've earned over the past 40 years, she said. Read more...

 

CCCS Customers Repaid: Those Who Lost Money to Credit Agency Get Checks

At least 85 consumers across the Intermountain West who lost money to a now-defunct consumer credit counseling agency are getting their funds back.

On Tuesday, the Utah Division of Consumer Protection announced that BALANCE Financial Fitness Program, a private company, was disbursing nearly $30,000 in refund checks to individuals who lost money to Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Utah. Read more...
